Building body safety early

Helping children understand their bodies, boundaries, feelings and where to get help lays the foundation for healthy development and helps keep them safe from problematic and harmful sexual behaviour.

Give children the words and skills to create safety

From early childhood, children can begin learning skills that help them understand their bodies and personal boundaries, talk about them without shame, recognise when something doesn't feel right and know who they can turn to for help. These skills are sometimes referred to as ‘protective factors’ or ‘protective behaviours’.

When children have the language and knowledge to talk about their bodies and experiences, they are better able to ask questions, seek support, or tell someone when something doesn't feel right.

Trust and connection are important protective factors

Trusted relationships are one of the most important protective factors in children’s lives. When children know who they can talk to and feel confident that adults will listen and respond, they are more likely to ask for help when they need it.

Creating opportunities for open conversations about bodies, feelings, boundaries and safety helps children understand that these topics are safe to talk about, and that support is there when they need it.
